How to read a tide chart

A tide chart plots the predicted water level through the day. This one is for Laguna Beach on Sunday, October 4. The line climbs to high tides of 3.8 ft at 6:23 AM and 5.1 ft at 4:34 PM and drops to a low tide of 3.0 ft at 10:43 AM. The gap between the highest and the lowest water, 2.0 ft, is that day's tidal range.

Heights are measured from mean lower low water (MLLW), the average height of each day's lower low tide, so the lowest tides can fall below the 0 ft line. On this day no low tide goes that far.

None of the lows is a tide pool window, which on this site means a low tide of 1.0 ft or lower between sunrise and sunset.

The guide on how to read a tide chart labels every part of a chart, from higher and lower highs to the tide pool band, and explains our weekly tide table and monthly calendar.
